The Righting.
Working with the idea of Japanese scrolls, I got inspired by Étienne-Jules Marey's 1894 chronophotographic study, Le Chat Tombant. This work depicts the sequential positions of a cat's righting reflex.
I used a red cat, a popular motif in Ukrainian folklore, to combine visual abstraction with scientific rhythm of fragmented photo shots. I was exploring the themes of resilience, instinct and transformation, drawing a parallel between the feline ability to land on its feet and the resilient spirit of the Ukrainian people.
